Appraisals of some poems in this volume
Nightmares in Paradise
“A paradise is a paradise,
a perfect place. Perfection needs no other qualification
because it is the ideal, the unattainable. If this paradise
is ‘giant,’ then it has a flaw and ceases to be paradise.”
---Dr. Patrick Oloko,
English Department,
University of Lagos.
Unreliable paradise “When poets turn historians,
they knit epics...like this wonderful one, and raise
old wounds asking for justice that has never been given
in the history of mankind.”
---Kola Bola,
Poet/Sub-Editor,
Newswatch Newspaper, Lagos, Nigeria.
The ocean weeps “This poem is good... I really love the energy
in the title...”
---Dr. Joseph Ushie,
Department of English,
University of Calabar,
Cross River State,
Nigeria.
Wiser than the Oracle “Excellent piece.”
---Christy Anyanji,
Consultant-Editor,
Lagos.
Obama’s bones to bones “Blessed you are good, so good that
making rhymes is nothing to you.”
---Amaka Emeka,
Media House,
Ghana.
Who wins the prize? “I love the rhythmic flow of this poem.
It could be sung. It is didactic, even as it carries some elements of
humour.”
---Richard Inya,
Abuja FCT.
Life is a woman “Great thoughts are embodied in this poem...”
---Dr. Patrick Oloko,
English Department,
University of Lagos.
The ocean weeps “…You write like a spirit whose
thoughts travel with the speed of light and can only
be understood by committed minds.”
---Fidelis Ejimofor Enwemeka, Ogun State, Nigeria.
Prophecies of the caring angels “Originality meets creativity.”
---Samuel Baki,
Benue State University,
Makurdi,
Benue.
On the prowl “Beautiful!”
---Ufoegbune Gideon Chukuma,
University of Agriculture,
Abeokuta,
Ogun State.
Mega city, mega rubbish “Mega city without a mega plan
to achieve it may ring no London out of Lagos...that, every
man knows...thumbs for this yet another wonderful poetic
observation.”
---Kola Bola,
Poet/Sub-Editor,
Newswatch Newspaper.
Mega city, mega rubbish “Un-put-down-able piece with
beautiful rhymes.”
---Fidelis Ejimofor Enwemeka,
Lagos.
Valentine’s prophecies “I am in love with this poem.”
---Funmilayo Jolaoso,
Surulere, Lagos.
Valentine’s prophecies “I love this poem, generally,
especially for the conflation of love emotions with
aspects of language - adjectives, nouns, adverbs –
which are the usual messengers between persons
entangled in the delicate matters of love.
Here, these otherwise indifferent parts of speech
become infused with the business of love on a
Valentine's Day. In other words, they become the
ultimate victims or beneficiaries in this business
between/among human hearts. In this respect,
I consider this poem to hold great promise for its
technique of reinvigorating what should be banal
with this shifting of the 'battle'/burden to parts of speech.”
---Dr. Joseph Ushie,
Department of English,
University of Calabar,
Cross River State,
Nigeria.
From your sexy guy “...Love mesmerizes...”
---Macpherson Okpara,
Department of English,
School of Languages,
Ebonyi State College of Education,
Nigeria.
From your sexy guy “So it is true that love knows no bound,
now l know... thumbs for this nice effort...”
---Kola Bola,
Poet/Sub-Editor,
Newswatch Newspaper.

The President and other poems
Those whose poems met the standards for inclusion in this anthology would receive a copy each, from Bulkybon Publications Company, for appreciating the good legacies of reading culture and all time promotion of peace personified by former President Goodluck Jonathan in Nigeria in spite of any human frailties associated with his tenure.
This book would continue to be a reference point not only about him but about Bayelsa and Nigeria as an entity in terms of our cultural heritage and values among Nigerian creative writers. It is a book that many students of Creative Writing, Political Science and History would find very important as a reference material in analysing salient issues in the polity for posterity.
Congratulations to former President Jonathan for still having some unknown friends who pour out their feelings and thoughts about him and Nigeria through many entertaining verses in the book. It would be a very good souvenir for those who would attend his handing over ceremony later this month. Xoxo. www.bulkybonbooks.blogspot.com

Beginning of wisdom
Boko boko boko boko haram,/
Bok, bok, bok, boko haram/
Pampering and roasting like rams/
Bok, bok, bok, boko haram!/
Spraying dread dancing everywhere in air/
Even mere power outage at business submit/
Sent CBN lion and diplomats scampering with fear/
Farting, crawling, crying, whispering “damn it”/
Bok, bok, bok, boko haram!/
Are your colours of death not like chameleonic war/
Maiming Muslims, Christians alike in jams?/
You even sentence unborn babies to earth’s floor…/
Could you hint us what truly ails your killing farms?/
Are your earthquakes for masses benefit?/
‘Faithfuls’ of the moon and star are also victims of your joy/
Sent too early to darkness in bloody bed sheets./
Oh, come see how sky sorrowfully boils!/
Bok, bok, bok, boko haram!/
Can you help bring all dubious Pharaohs to book?/
Could you blow all hidden wealth from their dams/
Instead of silencing saints with indiscriminate hook?/
Many masses will worship at your feet/
Including seven heavenly virgins smiling to earth/
Caressing every nook and cranny in paradise streets/
Painted with endless love, success, joy, devoid of death./
Bok, bok, bok, boko haram!/
Is there any light in this my this?/
Please, let me drink if you are accountable for peace/
Bok, bok, bok, boko haram!/
So, we can celebrate with goodbyes to harm/
Tickling, tickling, tickling the town/
With omelete, hotdogs baptised with jam/
Drenched with harmonious paradise plans/
Bok, bok, bok, boko haram!/

“Very musical…wonderful perspective…rhyme scheme.
I like the poem and its social commentary style.”

Butterfly
On the way, on the way,
A sunny summer day,
I saw a belle
Bright and colourful,
As beautiful, very beautiful
At first sight as a butterfly
Butterfly!
Butterfly!
My feelings flowing…
Your beauty, so teasing
Like a teasing angel
Wooing a convert,
Tempted and wooed
In love fell me so well
With spick and span
Butterfly-lady’s beauty spell.
How pretty you are!
Curvy thighs, curvy, curvy thighs
Your eyes and oranges as
Clusters of dates, giving me tantalizing sighs.
Your body regalia, God’s perfect work.
Your smile, your smile
A little while, every while
Is captive holding…
My heart melting, oh! With great love,
Just inexplicable love
As child in garden
Sighting a colourful butterfly so sudden.
Emotions sailing,
Showing, wailing,
Seeking and needing
Body-body touch, in love lust
For a belle in high class West End.
Many, many flies
Fly my way-
Dragon fly
House fly
Bees and tsetse fly
In human form, in garden West End
Their beauty unlike mine
Lovely, lovable, pretty-witty belle
Like an intoxicating wine.
Oh Butterfly, Butterfly! My love
I am your irreplaceable flower,
Come cuddle me with love
Like butterflies fondling flowers.
Butterfly belle, come to my place,
You are my butterfly,
Show me always, your smiling face,
I need you to fly
Into my arms
Otherwise I cry,
In love, I am Don Quixote,
I am not public shy
For love, true love don’t sly,
“Hello, hello! My butterfly!”
So I cried to try
Winning her love.
